Accessibility

The Monadnock Center strives to be a welcoming and accessible place for all visitors while balancing the preservation and integrity of our four historic buildings. The following information will help you plan your visit but if you have specific concerns or questions, we are happy to discuss them with you.

Museum/Archives/Mercantile Gift Shop/Bass Hall

  • Ramp access is available at the rear of the building and the door opens directly into Bass Hall.
  • The center’s restrooms are fully-accessible and located adjacent to Bass Hall.
  • Programs in Bass Hall are presented using a PA amplification system.
  • Museum exhibitions and the Mercantile Gift Shop are set up to allow for easy navigation when using a walker or wheelchair.

The Phoenix Mill House/ District #8 Schoolhouse

  • The Phoenix Mill House is a 19th century worker’s home. Two high steps are required to enter and exit the house and some visitors may find this difficult. The house is not accessible by wheelchair.
  • The District #8 Schoolhouse is accessed by two steps through a narrow door. It is not accessible by wheelchair.

Walking Tours

  • Walking tours follow the streets and sidewalks in Peterborough that have ADA curb cuts and are fully-accessible to wheelchairs.
  • Visitors using a walker may find the duration of the programs (approximately 90 minutes) difficult unless using a walker with a built-in seat.
  • Walking tour presenters use a portable microphone to amplify their presentation.

Cemetery Tours

  • The Monadnock Center’s cemetery tours are offered in Peterborough’s two historic cemeteries. The Village Cemetery (Concord Street) may be accessed using a wheelchair or walker but the terrain may make it difficult. The East Hill Burying Ground (Old Street Road) is located on a steep hillside and is NOT accessible to wheelchairs and walkers.
  • Tour participants have to navigate uneven ground and be able to stand for 90 minutes.
  • Cemetery tour presenters use a portable microphone to amplify their presentation.
