4th of July Celebration

July 4 2012Start your July 4 holiday with an 87 year old tradition! Join us for the annual Independence Day ceremony with the reading of the Declaration of Independence, the flag raising and a historical tribute.

The Naval Sea Cadets will raise the flag and Elizabeth Fortin will sing the Star Spangled Banner. This year, the Declaration will be read by several people spanning the generations with a child, a teenager and adults.

Local actor and Monadnock Center member Rob Koch will portray Robert Wilson, proprietor of Peterborough’s first tavern and a major in the Revolutionary War. In April 1775, the townspeople gathered at Wilson’s Tavern when they heard of the battle at Lexington. He led a contingent of Peterborough men, some armed only with pitchforks, south to Massachusetts and the start of the Revolution.

The ceremony starts at 10:00 a.m., is free and open to the public.
