B is for Bass Hall

B is for Bass Hall- Have you ever attended a concert or program in Bass Hall at the Monadnock Center and wondered about the name? Bass Hall is dedicated to the memory of Clara Foster Bass (1844-1933), a founding member of the Peterborough Historical Society (now known as the Monadnock Center for History and Culture). A descendant of one of Peterborough’s founding families, Clara Foster Bass was born and raised in Chicago. She returned to her ancestral town in the late 19th century and quickly became involved in town affairs.

Clara Foster Bass (1844-1933)

In 1913, Clara Foster Bass decided to build a permanent home for the historical society, “to house the records of the History of the town and of the Monadnock Region, to preserve memorials to the sons and daughters of Peterborough, and to provide a meeting place for the intellectual and social advancement of future generations.”

Bass and architect Benjamin F. W. Russell worked together to design a building that would become centerpiece for the

community. Central to the design was an elegant assembly hall designed for concerts, meetings, and events.  Their vision was realized at the groundbreaking in 1917 and continues to the present day. Today, Bass Hall is the site for over 100 community events each year. Some events, like the Music in Bass Hall series, are produced by the Monadnock Center, but many activities in Bass Hall are presented by other groups and organizations.

Great things happen in Bass Hall thanks to Clara Foster Bass!
