1917 Exhibit Opening

June 8 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Step back to the year 1917 in a new exhibit at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture. 1917 will open on Thursday, June 7 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with a free reception open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

With the U.S. entering the Great War, 1917 brought many changes to the lives of everyday people in New Hampshire. The home front was tasked with conserving food and fuel and investing in Liberty bonds to finance the war. 1917 looks at these dramatic changes as well as everyday life 100 years ago when Local Red Cross chapters were knitting socks and making bandages, the Draft Board was selecting recruits and families were planting Victory gardens.

Among the materials on display are a Croix de Guerre awarded to Charles W. Ames of Peterborough, Army and Red Cross uniforms, as well as numerous vintage photographs and illustrations. Featuring both military artifacts and objects from daily life, 1917 will take you back to the time when everyone was expected to “Do Your Bit!”

1917 will be on view through December 2017.
