Calvin Coolidge: The Monadnock Region As I Have Known It

September 19 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Calvin Coolidge

Join us for the Monadnock Center’s 117th Annual Meeting and meet President Calvin Coolidge!

Nearly one hundred years ago, Calvin Coolidge passed through the Monadnock Region on the way from his birthplace in Plymouth Notch, VT to the summer white house in Swampscott, MA. Thanks to living history performer Tracy Messer, the 30th President of the United States will reappear in Peterborough on Thursday, September 19th through his first-person presentation, Calvin Coolidge: The Monadnock Region As I’ve Known It.

“The Monadnock Region has always held a special place in the hearts of President and Mrs. Coolidge,” Messer explains. “Hancock, NH was the ancestral home of the First Lady, Grace (Goodhue) Coolidge and the homes of her paternal grandparents continue to serve as private residences.”

Famous for his blend of Yankee wit and wisdom, “Silent Cal” had surprising connections to many other towns here in the Monadnock region: Chesterfield, Dublin, Fitzwilliam, Gilsum, Keene, Marlborough, Marlow, Peterborough, Stoddard, and Walpole. Through a series fascinating stories about Calvin Coolidge’s classmates, relatives, and road trips you’ll discover the answers to the following questions, and more:

  • Who was the Monadnock artist that made a portrait of his son, Calvin, Jr.?
  • What town welcomed first lady Grace Coolidge to their sesquicentennial?
  • Where was the notorious intersection that led more than one U.S. president astray?
  • When was his only visit to the Monadnock Region as President?
  • Why did he cancel plans to see a Peterborough production of Romeo and Juliet?

The presentation will follow the Monadnock Center’s annual business meeting and election of directors. Voting at the meeting is limited to Monadnock Center members but the presentation is open to the public and admission is free for all.
