East Hill Graveyard Walking Tour

September 29 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

East Hill Graveyard Peterborough

Cemeteries and graveyards are outdoor history museums recording the lives of those that came before us. Join us on September 29 for a walk through Peterborough’s old burying ground on East Hill. In this graveyard, we will uncover the stories of the town’s earliest settlers and learn about life and death in the 18th century.

Among these ancient stones, we will see a wide arrayGabriel Stone - East Hill Graveyard of gravestone iconography including winged skulls and portrait stones. We will visit some of the best examples of gravestone carver’s art including the famous Gabriel stone and the unique work carved by John Wight, a stone carver from Londonderry. While this is not a Halloween tour, we will also see the grave of Mrs. Margaret Stinson, said to be a witch, and hear the story of her unusual powers.

The graveyard on East Hill is Peterborough’s second burial ground with stones dating back to the 1750s. The first burial took place in 1754 after an earlier burying ground located at the top of East Hill was found to too rocky and hard to dig. The earlier graveyard contains just a handful of graves and is now surrounded by private property. Both graveyards were located close to Peterborough’s first meeting house erected in 1752.

The second burying ground was used for a century and is home to many of Peterborough’s leading citizens and Revolutionary War veterans including William Diamond who was  drummer boy at the Battle of Lexington. In the 20th century, the graveyard served as an inspiration for the graveyard scene in Thornton Wilder’s Our Town.

This tour is free and everyone is welcome. Participants should meet at the cemetery located on Old Street Road. Parking is at the roadside. Be sure to wear practical shoes and be prepared for uneven terrain.

The tour will be held rain or shine. In the event of thunderstorms, the tour will be rescheduled.
