Flood Fire and Hurricane Walking Tour

September 17 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Flood waters on Main Street Peterborough

September 21, 1938 was a day of flood, fire, and hurricane winds in Peterborough that left $500,000 of damage in its wake ($10.5 million in today’s dollars). Like many towns, Peterborough experienced dramatic flooding from the storm and ferocious winds on that day. A fire in a commercial building in Peterborough’s downtown broke out just before the storm reached the town. Firemen fought through the storm to protect the community’s business and retail center. On this walk, we will trace the events of the day where they happened. You will hear about the fire, dramatic rescues from flooded homes, and the community efforts to rebuild.

A handout with period photographs will round out the walk and show the dramatic devastation wrought by one of the most powerful storms to hit New England.

The Flood, Fire, and Hurricane Walking Tour is free but registration is required. The tour is limited to 22 participants.

Walking Tours are held rain or shine. In the event of heavy rain or thunderstorms, the walk will be rescheduled.
