Fred Marple’s Guide to New England: “for locals and people from away.”

July 18, 2015 @ 7:30 pm

$10 – $40

Yankee humorist Fred Marple presents a “Guide to New England (for locals and people from away)” on July 18 and 25 at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture in Peterborough, NH.

“It’s summertime and we have a lot of visitors in the area,” says Marple. “I thought I’d try to explain some of the things that mystify people from away, and even make us scratch our own heads sometimes.

Fred will discuss Yankee food, including why we think baked beans and vegetables boiled with a piece of corned beef are examples of haute cuisine. He’ll examine Yankee fashion, from the ever-present flannel to rummage sale ensembles. You’ll learn about old houses and why we love them in spite of bats in the attic and wiring possibly installed by Ben Franklin. Fred will explain life in a small town, where everyone knows your business–often before you do—and the people who live there, from the cheapskate native to the affluent transplant.

Fred Marple has appeared on New Hampshire Chronicle, on radio, and in the pages of Yankee Magazine and New Hampshire Magazine. He has been called “hilarious,” “a hoot,” and “really smart for a guy his age.” He is also known as humorist Ken Sheldon, whose humor column “Only in New England” appears in Yankee Magazine.

Fred is also pleased to announce a special offer with the Monadnock Center, which is on a campaign to grow to 500 members by the end of 2015.
