Gravestone Art Cemetery Tour

October 22 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Gravestone Art Cemetery Tour

Gravestone art is the focus of this year’s fall cemetery tour in the East Hill burying ground in Peterborough. This walk will introduce you to the symbolism found on New England gravestones in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. East Hill is filled with unusual and significant examples of the carver’s art. And found among the stones are one-of-a-kind examples including a stone by John Wight, a New Hampshire carver whose unique style sets his work apart from his contemporaries.

While we wander among the stones examining death’s heads, urns & willows, and soul effigies, we will also learn about the people and their lives in Peterborough’s early days including the story of Peterborough’s witch.

The Gravestone Art Cemetery Tour will be held rain or shine. In the event of heavy rain or thunderstorms, we will reschedule the tour.

Wear sensible shoes and be prepared for steep and uneven ground.

We will meet at the East Hill burying ground on Old Street Road. Parking is along the side of the road. Carpooling is encouraged.

The tour is free but registration is required.
