Hearth Cooking: An Apple A Day

October 21, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

The apple is the focus for our October Hearth Cooking Saturday

New Hampshire’s favorite fall fruit is on the menu for our October Hearth Cooking Saturday. Stop by the Phoenix Mill House to sample apple recipes prepared over the open hearth and learn about life in a 1830s mill village from our costumed interpreters, the Prescott Family.

The Phoenix Mill Hous is a millworker’s home where Nancy and Samuel Prescott lived in the 1830s. The mill house is located directly behind the Monadnock Center’s main building at 19 Grove Street.

Housewife Nancy Prescott will be doing laundry in the days before washing machines (and even washing boards which were invented in the 1850s!) She will show you how to press the clean clothes using a sad iron heated on the fireplace. Samuel Prescott will be making brooms from broom corn. Broom making will happen at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Hearth Cooking Saturday is an open house program. Stop by for a few minutes or stay longer enjoying samples of the dishes.

Admission: Free, donations gratefully accepted.

Accessibility Note:

The Phoenix Mill House is an historic house built circa 1800. Two steps are required to enter and exit the house and may be difficult for some visitors.
