Music in Bass Hall: The Strathspey and Reel Society of New Hampshire Celebrates Tartan Day
April 6, 2014 @ 3:00 pm
$12 – $15
On Sunday, April 6th Music in Bass Hall is presenting an afternoon of Scottish music, featuring members of the Strathspey and Reel Society of New Hampshire. SRSNH was founded in 1988 to encourage the learning and preservation of traditional Scottish music. Though based in Concord, NH, the Society draws membership of over 100 people from throughout central New England. Their repertoire includes many of the standard Scottish fiddle tunes, but also tunes that are more obscure, or in some cases, recently composed in the Scottish tradition. For this concert, instrumentation will be primarily fiddles and woodwinds.
In addition to the musical performance, there will be a couple of short narrative pieces talking about Scottish heritage in New Hampshire: many early settlers here were of Scottish origin. This was especially true in Peterborough, and concert attenders can expect to come away with a little bit of history, nicely seasoned with jigs, reels, airs, and strathspeys (a type of musical form specific to Scottish music).
This concert also provides a celebration of Tartan Day, a holiday for Scottish Americans celebrating their contributions to America.
The 2014 Season for Music in Bass Hall is sponsored by Waterhouse Restaurant in Depot Square, Peterborough. Concert goers are encouraged to enjoy dinner before the show (or brunch before our Sunday afternoon shows), or libations and snacks after the concert. For reservations call 603-924-4001
