On Sunday, April 12th Music in Bass Hall is presenting an afternoon of Scottish music, featuring members of the Strathspey and Reel Society of New Hampshire. SRSNH was founded in 1988 to encourage the learning and preservation of traditional Scottish music. Though based in Concord, NH, the Society draws membership of over 100 people from throughout central New England. Their repertoire includes many of the standard Scottish fiddle tunes, but also tunes that are more obscure, or in some cases, recently composed in the Scottish tradition. For this concert, instrumentation will be primarily fiddles and woodwinds.
In addition to the musical performance, there will be a couple of short narrative pieces talking about Scottish heritage in New Hampshire: many early settlers here were of Scottish origin. David Weir, a descendant of Thomas Morison, the first settler of Peterborough, will talk about his family’s ancestry, and David Bruce, Chief Convener of the St. Andrews Society of New Hampshire will talk about the New Hampshire Tartan. Rodger Martin will enrich the program with recitations of poems of Robert Burns, and Vinny Zito will open the program with the highland pipes.
This concert also provides a celebration of Tartan Day, a holiday for Scottish Americans celebrating their contributions to America.
