Scottish and Irish Fiddle Workshop with Jamie Laval

May 12 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Workshop For Scottish/Irish Fiddle

Nationally acclaimed performer, composer, arranger, and educator, Jamie Laval will conduct a Scottish and Irish fiddle workshop at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture on Saturday, May 12 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Celtic fiddle is about making people want to dance. The workshop will start with the generic, stripped down versions of several classic reels, jigs, strathspeys, and hornpipes. As the class progresses, layers of dance-inducing devices will be introduced into the tunes. Slurred bowings are one of the most requested concerns of students and the workshop will delve deeply into this area by learning the bowing patterns which provide the best groove.

After introducing several kinds of Scottish- and Irish-style ornaments, participants will work on using them to add rhythmic drive to the tune. Laval will point out how tunes are constructed in organized patterns based on a few simple harmonies. He teaches the class primarily by ear, but sheet music of tunes and bowing styles will be given for home study. The class will be a fun, supportive learning environment. Audio recorders are welcome.

The workshop is open to musicians of all levels of experience from the novice to the seasoned fiddler. Participants should have a basic knowledge of fingering and bowing and be able to play a few simple tunes. Musicians with other melody instruments are welcome to participate.

Jamie Laval has been called “One of North America’s finest practitioners of traditional Scottish music.” He grew up in the Pacific Northwest where he received his musical training at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. During the early years of his career he was a member of the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, the Seattle Opera, and the Victoria Symphony. He has recorded music for film and television and collaborated on Dave Matthews’ platinum album Some Devil. Laval’s most recent CD, Murmurs and Drones, won the popular vote for “Best World Traditional Album” in the 2012 Independent Music Awards.

Laval teaches classes and workshops for institutions such as St. Andrews University in North Carolina, California State University, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Learn more about Jamie Laval here.
