Sowing the Seeds of Democracy: Teacher Workshop

June 26 @ 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

The New Hampshire Institute for Civics Education, in partnership with the Monadnock Center, presents Sowing the Seeds of Democracy: Integrating Civics in Elementary School and Beyond, a teacher workshop on Monday, June 26 at the Monadnock Center in Peterborough. This workshop features experts from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and New Hampshire educators sharing practical and useful ideas for engaging our youngest citizens and integrating civics into the classroom.

The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program opens with keynote speakers Benjamin Mardell and Carrie James of the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Project Zero. With the belief that children are not just future citizens but are citizens of the here and now, Mardell and James examine ways in which children and adolescents are developing civic agency through voice, dialogue, and listening. Through case study presentations drawing from their research, Ben and Carrie will engage participants in a discussion of current tensions and opportunities for civic agency and civic education.

Afternoon breakout sessions feature New Hampshire educators sharing resources, lessons, and strategies for integrating civics into the elementary school classroom. Among the presenters are JJ Prior and Emilia Whippie Prior, educators in Nelson and Keene and co-authors of The Patriot Papers, who discuss using primary sources to engage students in learning about government and history. Plymouth State University Associate Professor of Education Dr. Alison Wenhart will present inquiry-based models for teaching students about their rights, roles, and responsibilities as citizens. The New Hampshire Institute for Civics Education’s mission is to dramatically improve civics education in New Hampshire’s schools. NHICE has set an ambitious goal of making New Hampshire first in the nation in citizenship preparation.

The workshop is free and a stipend is available. Advance registration is required. To register, visit www.nhcivics.org.
