The Phoenix Mill House Restoration
The Phoenix Mill House was originally located near the north band of Nubanusit Brook, about 50 yards from where it now sits behind the main building of the Monadnock Center. Threatened with demolition, it was acquired by the Peterborough Historical Society. It serves both as an example of preservation, and also a demonstration of what a house of that era would was like. The Phoenix Mill House is used for educational programs, for periodic demonstrations of hearth cooking, and occasionally as a social gathering place when its particular ambiance is desired.
Like any old building, the Phoenix Mill House requires ongoing maintenance. The current challenge is to have it painted – a project made significantly more complicated by the need to deal with lead paint abatement. We are hoping to raise at least $6,000 by June 1 so that we can proceed with this project and put the building to good use for the summer season.
