the region is also home to two very unusual veterans memorials. One commemorates those who served in World War I and the other grew out of one family’s loss in World War II.

The Buddies Memorial in Jaffrey was sculpted by Danish artist Viggo Brandt-Erichsen from a massive 40 ton boulder. The deep relief sculpture shows a soldier carrying a wounded buddy in the battle field. The memorial was dedicated on Armistice Day in 1930.

In Rindge, the Cathedral of the Pines is a memorial site with sweeping views of Mt. Monadnock. The Cathedral mission is to honor all Americans who have served the nation in search of peace. The Cathedral of the Pines was established by the Sloane family in 1945 after the death of their son Sanderson, a pilot shot down over Germany in 1944. On the Cathedral grounds, the Altar of the Nation honors American men and women who lost their lives in war. The altar is built from stones from all 50 states.
